If you ever find your way to Spain or more specifically Galicia and are enamored by beer then you need to try these two beers.
The first is called Estrella Galicia and its a lighter beer with a refreshing taste. The second is called 1906 and is a family of darker heavier beers. Even though these two beers come from the same company Hijos De Rivera they are marketed differently. Estrella Galicia comes in its classical lager variety as well as a non alcoholic version. 1906 has different styles including a stout (black coupage), strong euro lager (red vintage) and the more popular classical vienna lager (1906). The company makes more beers but these are its crown jewels. The vienna lager 1906 is one of my favorite beers.
These beers have won numerous awards and as of lately 1906 red vintage has been said to be one of the best beers in the world. The 1906 family has won many awards in the international and world beer challenge through out the years including some gold and silver medals.
You will have a hard time finding Estrella Galicia or 1906 outside of Galicia but to me its one of the best beers to come out of Spain. Let me tell you that if you happen to find this beer outside of Spain such as in the states it does not compare to the freshness of when bought in Spain. There is a noticeable difference in taste. Either way it is a great beer to try.
The craft beer game is starting to boom in Spain so keep a look at for those indie beers. Spain has many other good commercial beers but nothing to write about. So on your next trip to Spain or even Europe keep an eye out for one of these sensational beers.
